In Partnership
FUND RAISING FOR
CHARITIES and GOOD CAUSES.
The
guaranteed entry places available through Rotary are available to those
willing to raise a guaranteed level of sponsorship monies. No race entry
fee is payable.
The
principal causes jointly supported by Ironman UK & Rotary in connection
with the 2008 event are:
|
1
The Leukaemia research fund (principal cause)
“Fighting
the battle against cancers of the blood.”
|
 |
The only national charity devoted exclusively to
fighting these diseases, Leukaemia Research is at the forefront of the
fight against Leukaemia, Hodgkin's and other lymphomas, myeloma,
myelodysplasia and aplastic anaemia. Their scientists are dedicated to
improving treatments, finding cures and learning how to prevent these
diseases, diagnosed in over 24,500 people in the UK each year
Will you be one of the great BANANA ARMY!. Last year
the BANANA ARMY was made up of over 3000 triathletes all helping to
raise over £500,000 for Leukeamia Research. Are you prepared to join
them in 2008 and get prepared for the big day at the Ironman UK
Triathlon?
2
The Children’s Hospice Association (principal cause)
“Helping
Children with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition.”
In the
south-west of England alone there are over 800 children & their families
who could be helped. Children’s Hospice South West was started to help
them, with the first hospice opening in Barnstaple in 1995 and the second
newly opened in North Somerset in 2007. These are the
only children’s hospice in the south-west & support over 200 children &
their families, offering respite, relaxation, friendship, a sense of
community & beyond that can share the 24-hour care of a very sick child &
support the family in bereavement.
The
demands have continued to increase Families were welcomed to the new
Hospice in North Somerset early in 2007 and your help is needed to
contribute significantly to
the balance of the £15 million that was needed to build, equip & endow it with initial running
costs.
Our
additional major causes are:
3
The Air Ambulance
Service
Dorset & Somerset
All tri-athletes will be aware of
this essential service, none more so than the competitor in the IronmanUK
triathlon who was airlifted to hospital following an accident in the 2005
race.
None of us know when we wake up in
the morning if we are going to need the services of an air ambulance - &
it is nice to know it is there, just in case.
New legislation however has required the
introduction of a new generation aircraft, the EC135, which whilst larger,
faster, smoother & easier for patient loading which will cost in excess of
£3,000 per day to operate.
"Air Ambulance"
Additionally
now an ‘Eye in the Sky’ campaign has been launched to equip the craft
with a sophisticated GPS based navigation system. It seems almost
incredible today that the crew use Ordnance Survey maps to find their
way to their pick up point. £50,000 is needed – let us see together
what we can do to help; remembering that Air Ambulance do save lives –
MAYBE YOURS!

MacMillan Cancer Care
MacMillan
Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. Support
is provided not only in practical terms but medically, and emotional and
financial support is also given.
MacMillan
push for better cancer care; cancer touches us all – let us see together
what we can do to help.
Exceptionally, we have just a handful of bonded entry places for athletes
strongly committed to raising funds for an individual charity. If you are
in this category take a look at the
list of charities that Rotary & Ironman UK have agreed to support.
If you take an entry place in
this category, your fund raising will be divided between your preferred
charity & the causes supported jointly by Ironman UK & Rotary in the
proportion 50/50%, 50% passing without deduction by Rotary to your nominated cause.
If your charity is listed please submit an application entering the name(s)
of the charity that you wish to carry sponsorship for. Please note that
the sponsorship monies that you raise will be channelled via Rotary. In
turn, the funds will be passed to the nominated charity in full & credited
to your fund raising efforts.
If when
completing our on-line entry form you find these few entry places are
taken, please e-mail us & ask if we can offer another place.
Similarly, if the charity you wish to support is not listed ask if it may
be possible for us to add it to the list and offer a race entry slot.
If you are seeking an entry in the Rotary Charity Team as members of the
"Banana Army" and select "Banana Army" or "Leukaemia Research Fund" as
your nominated cause please note there is no limit to the number of race
slots available.
FOR THE
FUTURE
Discussions
are taking place now to consider the establishment of a trust to work
towards establishing a permanent Sporting Facility in the years ahead –
facilities that could be used by triathletes and the wider public.
If you wish
to know more and be advised of progress please email and we shall add
your name to our contact list.
